Turkey is one country that has many types of traditional instruments.
One of Turkish traditional instruments is Zurna.
Zurna is included wind instrument. This instrument has a strong
voice, so that is often played in open air, especially for events
such as village weddings, folk dances, traditional theater
performance and other ceremonial events. Generally, Zurna is played
with a drum in a musical group, because it has high intonation and
sound level.
Zurna seems like a wooden trumpet. It is similar with
clarinet and saxaphone that have finger holes and reed. The reed of
zurna made of cylindrical bamboo pipe that thinner than little
finger. Zurna needs adequate air pressure in to the reed to get
voice and high air pressure to get high volume voice.
Zurna's sound range is almost two octaves and contains eight
melody keys. Seven of them in front of side and one in the back.
Finger holes of zurna generally around 6-8 mm diameters. The length
of this instrument ranges between 30 up to 60 cm and widens out at
finger holes end side. At the blowing end side made of thin pipe
such as rod where the reed goes that called metem. On the middle of
metem is attached avurtluk to help breathing technique.
If compared with the similar type instrument, zurna looks
like sunay in China and shenay in
India. In Greece this instrument is called as zorna,
in Yugoslavia is known as zurla. Lebanon and Iraq
are also recognizing this instrument that called as zamr.
Tunis is also has this instrument that called as zokra.
Zurna is found as part of folk instrument for open air of the
old world. Generally, this instrument has been played as military
music during in the middle ages. But, today it is still played by
Mehter band with soldier clothes performing in Istambul.
