BLACK SEA KEMENCE | Turkish Folk Instruments
|
|
The word 'Karadeniz' actually identifies the origin
of the instrument as coming from the Black Sea region. The Karadeniz
Kemencesi or just kemence is a three-stringed instrument resembling a violin, that
is played with the help of a bow. Kemence's origin dates back to the 11th
century when the Seljuk Turks colonized Anatolia and Persia.
Anatolia lies in the vicinity of the Black Sea, hence the
descriptive term of the instrument.
The Karadeniz Kemencesi is held upright while playing, normally by
resting it on the knees of the musician or the player may hold the
kemence in
front of them while standing and has a very distinct, almost
primitive sound.
