Your flight into Istanbul instantly takes you back in history to the
great Ottoman Empire. One of the more "recent" Ottoman palaces can
be found in Dogubeyazit, a district of Agri province of Turkey.
Construction of Ishak Pasha Palace began in 1685 by Colak Abdi
Pasha, the bey of Bayazit province. His grandson, Ishak Pasha
completed this stunning palace in 1784. Considering this is a
culture of thousands of years of history, it's easy to see why Ishak
Pasha palace might be termed "recent".
The location of Ishak Pasha palace is breathtaking. Built on a hill
on a mountain side, it is 5 km east of Dogubeyazit, Turkey's most
eastern district, 15 km southwest of Mount Ararat and is a border
crossing into Iran.

Looking out over the plain of Dogubeyazit, Ishak Pasha Palace
embodies the most distinguished and magnificient examples of 18th
Century Ottoman architecture: neat stone workmanship and ornate
carvings, symbolic of Ottoman culture. Though Ishak Pasha Palace is
a semi-ruined site, it remains a most valuable historical treasure
for tourists.
The landscape around Ishak Pasha Palace is hauntingly beautiful. The
golden morning sun slowly rises over this unforgettable mountainous
region. This area boasts of several mountains: Ararat, Little
Ararat, Tendürek Dagi (3,533m), Kaletepe (3,196m)
Agri dagi (2,934m)
and Göller tepe (2,643m).
Nothing is more romantic than the brilliant sunsets melding into a
deep sapphire sky that fire the imagination, reminding one of the
Ottomans, Persians, Arabs and Byzantines whose fascinating history
is felt everywhere in this region.
The carved stone entrance is enthralling to view under the vast dome
of deep blue skies overhead.....a perfect symmetry. When the sun
rests upon Ishak Pasha Palace, the stonework seems magically turned
to gold.
The interior consists of a mosque, mausoleum, harem, mens'
quarters, dungeons, a soup kitchen and hall for entertainment and
ceremonies. Though the walls surrounding Ishak Pasha Palace may once
have served as protection, today, these battlements serve to add an
aura of strength.
The weather in summer here is hot and dry, in winter cold and dry as
would be expected in a plains topography.
Ishak Pasha Palace is an art history lovers treasure. Yet for
tourists, it is reminiscent of a castle in a fairy tale of long ago.
Ishak Pasha Palace is definitely not to be missed when visiting
Turkey. Let your mind travel back in time. When you leave Ishak
Pasha Palace, you'll leave your heart behind.
