Yoghurt is also called yogurt; it is made from
cultured whole, reduced-fat or skim milk. Soy milk or goats milk are
also used to produce yoghurt. Youghurt is cousin of sour cream, so
un-flavored yoghurt is a excellent sour cream substitute. The
consistency of yoghurt varies from custard-like to thin enough to
drink. Drinkable yoghurt makes a refreshing cold beverage that is
healthful and easy to transport. Natural Yoghurt has a tangy taste,
so it is often sweetened by adding fruit, honey, sugar or artificial
sweeteners. Yoghurt must be stored under refrigeration.
Origins of Yoghurt
Yoghurt has been around for about 4,500 years. While the exact
origins are lost to history, it is likely that early people
discovered yoghurt when natural bacteria in the air fermented milk
being stored in skin bags. Medieval Turks recorded using youghurt
and it is still featured in Turkish recipes today.
Health Benefits of Yoghurt
Yogurt has many health benefits. It provides plenty of calcium,
vitamin B12, riboflavin, and lots of protein. Some uses of yogurt
include how it can be used to prevent osteoporosis. Emerging
research suggests that it can fight off some forms of cancer, and
that it can provide calcium to those who are lactose intolerant. In
fact there are many types of yogurt and just as many ways to eat
them. Plain yogurt is consumed mostly in Mediterranean countries.
Cold yogurt made from cow milk and served with fruit is consumed
heavily in the U.S, but the French eat four times more yogurt than
Americans. Besides the array of flavors there are also many
different bases for the yogurt itself, sometimes cow milk is used,
while at other times goat or sheep milk is used. In any case which
ever type of yogurt you prefer you're sure to enjoy not only the
taste but the benefits too. Yoghurt makes a delicious low calorie
snack that is beneficial to dieters; recent studies have shown that
the calicium in yoghurt -made from skimmed milk- promotes weight
loss. The best quality yoghurts contain live bacteria that helps to
aid digestion and improve the immune system.
