Muslims are those who observe the Islamic religion. Pray fasting is a
practice observed during Ramadan by those who practice Islamic
beliefs. Ramadan is a religious observance that takes place during
the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. For the entire ninth month,
Muslims are expected to fast, meaning no food or drink, from dawn to
sunset. In addition to fasting, this is also a time of increased
prayer. This practice during Ramadan is called pray fasting.
Typically during pray fastings, Muslims will place an increased
focus on both prayer and fasting. They will pray for guidance and
purity, ask forgiveness for past sins and practice self restraint
and good doings. To Muslims, the ninth month of increased prayer and
fasting is thought to cleanse the soul as well as the body.
Cleansing the body through fasting and the mind through prayer is a
way to free both the body and soul from past harms and make Muslims
more generous and charitable.
The meal before the prayer fast is called the lftar, which is the
meal to begin the fast. For Muslims this is a social time where
everyone gets together before Ramadan. Special foods are prepared
and people are invited to gather together to enjoy the last meal
before fasting period begins. The fast itself allows Muslims to
experience empathy towards others that may be less fortunate, by
experiencing hunger and sacrifice.
In addition to being a religious observance fasting is known to have
other benefits. Observing the fast properly is said to bring about a
sense of inner peace and inner calm. Fasting is also considered a
way to practice self-control and sacrifice, which is a cornerstone
of Islamic practices.
From a medical standpoint, fasting is considered a benefit to the
body. Fasting allows the body to rid itself of toxins and fats that
have built themselves up inside the body. It is also thought that
anti-aging and growth hormones are released more rapidly during
times of fasting. The body is said to heal itself. Often times
periods of fasting allows the internal organs have time to repair
themselves without interruption. It is true that fasting for any
extended period of time will hurt the body, fasting for short
periods of time is said to assist with the healing process.
For Muslims the practice of pray fasting during the Ramadan
emphasizes the religious belief in the strength of the connection
between body and soul.
