The year 2008 marks the 801st anniversary of the
birth and 723rd death of Rumi, one of Turkey's greatest mystic and
spiritual leader. Rumi was the founder of the Mevlevi also know as
the Whirling Dervishes.
They are know for spinning up to fifteen
minutes at a time during there religions ceremonies to the ancient
Islamic hymns. They are a sight to see in there long white flowing
dresses. The best time to see them is during the Mevlana
Commemoration Festival in the month of December in the town of
Konya, Turkey. It is more then a Festival it is a ancient tradition. |
